Meet NightGuard: 12-Hour Reusable Night-Time Protection

NightGuard Quick Start FAQs

NB: NightGuard must be washed 3 times before first use - this is needed to build up the absorbency.

1. How long can my baby wear NightGuard?
NightGuard is designed to provide up to 12 hours of overnight protection, making it suitable for longer stretches of sleep and overnight use.*Boosters must be added for heavier wetters to last full 12 hours overnight.

2. Do I need a separate waterproof cover?
No. NightGuard has a built-in waterproof outer, so there’s no need to add a separate nappy cover.

3. What age is NightGuard suitable for?
NightGuard is designed to grow with your little one from approximately 3 months to 4 years, with adjustable sizing and absorbency.

4. Do I need to use the booster?
For overnight use, we recommend using the included snap-in bamboo trifold booster. Every baby is different, so absorbency can be adjusted as your child grows or if they are a particularly heavy wetter - add in one of our Mighty Hemp Boosters.

5. How should NightGuard fit?
NightGuard should fit snugly around the legs and waist without being tight. Make sure there are no gaps and that all absorbent fabric is tucked completely inside the waterproof outer. Our EcoKinly Vest Extenders can used to increase room in bbay vests.

6. What if NightGuard leaks?
First check the fit and absorbency. Make sure there are no gaps around the legs, all absorbent material is tucked inside, and the nappy isn't completely saturated by morning. Very tight sleepwear can also compress the nappy and contribute to leaks.

7. How do I wash NightGuard?
Dry store, rinse wash on cool first and then a long cotton wash on 40/60. No softener or bleech. Open the nappy out fully for drying and make sure it is completely dry before using again.

8. Can I use NightGuard if I don't use reusable nappies during the day?
Absolutely. Reusable doesn't have to be all or nothing. You can use NightGuard every night or just a few nights each week alongside disposable nappies — whatever works for your family.

New to reusable night nappies? Here’s everything you need to know.

How does NightGuard work?

Night nappies need more absorbency than daytime nappies.

As babies begin sleeping for longer stretches, they can be in the same nappy for 10–12 hours. That means significantly more absorbency is needed to get comfortably through the night.

NightGuard combines a highly absorbent natural bamboo layers with a waterproof outer and additional snap-in bamboo trifold booster.

The absorbent system includes:

  • Two absorbent bamboo layers
  • A moisture-wicking stay-dry fleece layer
  • A snap-in bamboo trifold booster – which gives adds another 6 layers of absorbency.
  • Adjustable absorbency to suit your child

Together, these layers are designed to absorb and hold moisture throughout the night while the stay-dry lining helps keep moisture away from your baby's skin.

Do I need a separate waterproof cover?

No.

This is one of the biggest differences between NightGuard and many traditional reusable night nappies.

Traditional night-time reusable systems can involve a highly absorbent fitted nappy, separate boosters and then an additional waterproof cover over everything.

NightGuard has been designed as an all-in-one night-time solution with its waterproof outer already built in.

Simply adjust the size, add the absorbency your child needs and put it on.

No separate cover. No complicated night-time system.

How do I fit NightGuard?

Getting the right fit is important for both comfort and leak protection.

Adjust the rise snaps on the front of NightGuard to suit your baby's size, then fasten the nappy so that it sits securely around the waist and legs.

You want a comfortable, snug fit without being overly tight. Make sure you can fit two stacked fingers between the babys tummy and the nappy.

Before bedtime, check that:

  • There are no obvious gaps around the legs
  • The nappy sits securely around the waist
  • All absorbent material is completely tucked inside the waterproof outer
  • The booster is lying flat inside the nappy
  • Clothing over the nappy isn't excessively tight

Night nappies naturally look and feel a little bulkier than daytime nappies because they contain more absorbency. That's completely normal. It can help with getting the right fit to size up in vests and baby grows or choose stretchy ribbed cotton versions. EcoKinly Vest Extenders can be used to increase the room in a baby vest and avoid compression leaks.

How much absorbency does my baby need?

Every baby is different.

How much your child wees overnight will depend on their age, feeding, sleeping pattern and how long they wear their NightGuard.

The included bamboo trifold booster provides additional absorbency for overnight use and can be positioned to concentrate absorbency where your child needs it most. Fold it more to the front for tummy sleepers and boys, more to the centre for back sleepers.

As your baby grows, NightGuard's absorbency can be adjusted with them. Add more absorbency by adding additional boosters into the pocket of NightGuard.

That's one of the advantages of a reusable night-time system: rather than moving through increasingly absorbent disposable nappy sizes, you can adapt the nappy to your individual child.

What age does NightGuard fit?

NightGuard is designed to grow with your baby from approximately 3 months through to 4 years.

The adjustable rise and waist allow the fit to change as your child grows, while the absorbency can also be adapted to their changing night-time needs.

For smaller babies at the 3 month age range, the nappy can be used without the trifold, add in the trifold when they need more absorbency.

One nappy can therefore be used across several stages of childhood — and because NightGuard is reusable, it can potentially be passed on and used for another child too.

How do I wash NightGuard?

After use, remove any solid waste from the nappy and store your NightGuard with your other reusable nappies or in a wet bag  until wash day.

  1. Rinse wash first with cool / low temp and no powder - nappies only in the machine for this step.
  2. Long cotton wash on 40 / 60 with powder detergent of choice - you can add extra laundry to this step. No softener or bleach.

NightGuard can then be washed as part of your normal reusable nappy washing routine.

If you're using EcoKinly reusable nappies during the day too, your NightGuard can simply join the rest of your nappies in the wash.

Always make sure the nappy is completely clean and dry before using it again.

How long does NightGuard take to dry?

Highly absorbent night nappies naturally contain more material than daytime nappies, which can traditionally mean longer drying times.

NightGuard has been designed with this in mind.

Part of the absorbent system can be turned inside out for drying, exposing more of the absorbent material to the air and helping the nappy dry more efficiently between uses. Turn both parts of the napy inside out - the cover and the trifold to speed up drying time.

Open the nappy out fully after washing and allow it to dry thoroughly before reassembling it for bedtime.

My NightGuard leaked — what should I check?

Don't panic. A leak doesn't necessarily mean your reusable nappy isn't working.

If you're experiencing leaks, there are a few things worth checking first:

1. Check the fit

Make sure NightGuard is sitting snugly around the legs and waist without gaps.

2. Check everything is tucked in

No absorbent fabric should be sticking outside the waterproof outer. Exposed absorbent material can wick moisture onto clothing.

3. Check your absorbency

If the nappy is completely saturated in the morning, your child may simply need additional absorbency or a change in booster positioning. Add Mighty Hemp Boosters.

4. Think about where absorbency is needed

Positioning the booster where your child tends to wet most heavily can help maximise its performance.

5. Check clothing

Very tight sleepsuits or pyjamas can compress a heavily saturated reusable nappy and contribute to leaks. Make sure there is enough room around the nappy.

A little adjustment to fit or absorbency can make a big difference.

Will my baby feel wet overnight?

NightGuard includes a moisture-wicking stay-dry fleece layer.

This helps move moisture away from the surface next to your baby's skin and into the absorbent layers beneath.

The result is a softer, drier-feeling surface while the absorbent core gets on with the important job of holding moisture throughout the night.

What is NightGuard made from?

NightGuard combines highly absorbent materials with a durable waterproof outer.

Its absorbent layers use bamboo and cotton, while the waterproof outer is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

EcoKinly nappies are designed without added chemicals and meet SGS and CPSIA safety standards.

We believe parents should be able to understand what the products they use every day are made from — particularly products worn against their baby's skin for hours at a time.

Can a reusable night nappy save money?

The real advantage of a reusable nappy is in the name: you use it again.

And again.

And again.

Instead of buying a new disposable night nappy every night, NightGuard can be washed and reused throughout your child's nappy-wearing years, and then again on a sibling!

Based on using one NightGuard twice per week over four years, the purchase cost works out at approximately 6 cent per use. Use that same nappy for another child and the cost per use falls even further.

You don't have to use reusable nappies every night to benefit either.

Do I have to switch to reusable nappies full-time?

Absolutely not.

Reusable nappies don't need to be all or nothing.

Some families will use NightGuard every night. Others might use it two or three nights each week. Some parents may use disposable nappies during the day but choose reusable protection overnight.

Every reuse counts.

Even replacing just a few disposable nappies each week can mean hundreds fewer single-use nappies over your child's nappy-wearing years.

The best reusable routine is the one that works for your family.

Why choose a reusable nappy at night?

For many parents, night-time is the final hurdle when moving towards reusable nappies.
